At the Marae
Oh my goodness! I didn’t know that we were going to Orakei Marae on the 14th of October and the whole of Newmarket School was coming as well. Newmarket School was going there to learn about Maori culture and language.
Newmarket school rode in different buses to Orakei Marae and our class and a few of the others came in a low bus, not a double decker bus.
I looked outside the window and I saw trees and the mountain Rangitoto in the distance. It was really pretty.
The boys and girls of Newmarket School waited patiently outside the marae and waited for the karanga.
The older people were in front of the school and the people were my papa, Miss Koefed, Jackson, Paniora and Teiria.
Newmarket School arrived outside the meetinghouse.
Newmarket School removed their shoes outside the door and I put mine by my mum’s and my sister’s.
We entered the meetinghouse and did the song E toru nga mea.
Then we listened to a speech about big the marae and it was very interesting. It was about the carvings in the marae. After Matt had finished all of his speeches my papa, Hone, thanked him leading the school [in Maori]. Then we sang Purea nei.
Then Mrs Sutherland led us outside the marae and told us that it was morning tea and we had two cookies and an apple.
After we had eaten and played around on the huge field we did some sketching inside and outside of the marae. I drew inside the marae first but I forgot what the carving was called and then I went outside to draw the big bird up the top of the wharenui.
After we had finished drawing we went outside the marae and got on the bus and returned to school. I hope I can go back some day again.

Marae
By Harrison
WALT: write a recount
I went on a bus on the way to Orakei Marae. I looked out the window and saw trees and mountains. I waited out side quietly for the karanga, the call of welcome.
Mr. Ka led me in to the meeting house. I arrived on the meeting house deck and removed my shoes. I sat in the meeting house and listened to speeches. I had morning tea in the eating house. I played on the hill. I took the bus back to school. I felt happy. I went and had morning tea and it was delicious. Sketching the carvings was fun.

Going to Orakei Marae

WALT: write a recount
On Wednesday I did not know that it was Orakei Marae visit. The whole of Newmarket school went to Orakei Marae. The old lady led us into the Marae and we sat down in the wharenui. Matt told us where the toilets were and where the eating area was. We had two biscuits and an apple for morning tea. After morning tea we drew in the marae. I drew 5 pictures. After we drew we went and got back on the bus and went back to school.

The Marae Trip

WALT: write a recount
Trips! Trips! Trips! On the 14th of October New market primary school went to the Orakei marae . When Newmarket school got there I had to wait for the karanga (means call of welcome) so we can enter the marae. We walked to the wharenui.
I entered the wharenui with the room8 boys and sat down on the floor. I prayed two karakia about the marae. After that I sang a waiata and did actions too. After that I had to wait a while to get out of the wharenui.
I went down to the wharekai (which is the eating house) . The eating house is where you eat. I had to line up to get my food. I got a biscuit and an apple. I ate it and it was yummy. After I ate, I played with William and Harrison down the hill but Miss Koford made Newmarket Primary school go back up. After that we had to go.
I felt happy after I went to the marae. It was so much fun. I enjoyed it. This was the best school trip I liked.

At Orakei Marae

WALT: write a recount
Oh yes we were going to the Marae! I hoped there were not too many Maori languages.
We were on the bus talking. The whole school was going to the Marae. Then the bus stopped so now we were at the Marae. Wow the Marae looked a bit like a human body. Wow I think it was so old. The Marae was a Maori house. We are at the Marae for a long time. Oh no we were finished at the Marae. I wanted to stay. We all now got onto the bus. I looked out of the window.
We are going back to school. When we were back to school, I went back to my classroom.

The Beautiful Marae

“Oh hurry up would you”. Yesterday the whole of Newmarket school went to this extraordinary Marae.
First we waited outside the gate for the old women to welcome us onto the Marae. (The welcome call in Maori is called a karanga)
Secondly when we were in the Marae some old people did a speech (which is a whaikorero). Emere’s papa did a speech to introduce us. Mat (who is the owner of the Marae) did a speech to welcome us.
After the last speech we went to eat outside in the wharekai. Our morning tea was one apple and two biscuits
Back at school we reflected on what we did at the Marae.
I loved going to Orakei Marae.

Marae
At the Marae
I could not belive it. On the 14th of October Newmarket school went to Orakei Marae. Before I knew it I was on the bus. When I got to the Marae I gasped because the sculptures looked impressive.
We waited outside the Marae for the call.
Then we took our shoes off and stepped into the wharenui. There were lots of carved sculptures and we sat down quietly. There was a man talking. After he had finished talking it was morning tea. We got an apple and a biscuit.
Then it was home time. So we boarded on the bus and went back to Newmarket school.
